I’m Leaving

A story about going on holiday for children by Fraser Davidson & Chris Brandon and produced by Cub Studio.

Recently, many of the Cub Studio family have become parents of young children.

Despite the joy of being able to travel the world again, many parents will know how all consuming the logistics of travel with children is for a young family.

‘I’m Leaving’ is a story created in honour of you and your little monsters as you embark on your travel adventures.

We hope you enjoy it!

In April of 2023, while taking a holiday break from the studio, I travelled to Tenerife with my wife and two small children (Ray, 4 and Margot, 9 months).

Despite his huge excitement at travelling abroad and journeying by flying metal tube, Ray was exhausted by the whole experience.

Below is the text message I sent to my parents having put him down to sleep on night one.

It was clear that we needed to create an animated piece that encapsulates the great adventure of air travel, but that also serves to explain the complex and laborious nature of the process.

Having whipped up something semi-legible, we brought in the big guns to create a carefully crafted script for our story. For this, we enlisted the services of friend of the studio Chris Brandon (Bloodlands - 2021, Zoetrope - 2021). Below is the animatic we created.

We had a huge amount of fun creating the familiar locations and stops that mark the process of flying internationally.

We wanted to bring a soft and lush palette to environments that can seem sterile and drab as our hero travelled from his holiday destination back home.

Below are frames from the key environments we created.

‘I’m Leaving’ is written as a children’s book as well as an animation. We initially worked up ideas as to how we could distinguish between the lines of the two main characters in a fun and aesthetic way.

Thank you for watching, we really hope you enjoyed ‘I’m Leaving’!
